Writing songs is a way to hypnotize yourself. Can you lose yourself in the writing? I'm not talking about some woo woo made up stuff. I'm talking about the ability to let go of any barriers to your creation of something. What are the barriers for you? My main barriers are these: physical discomfort--I find myself saying "I don't feel like sitting here any longer." Part of that is definitely sitting uncomfortably in a chair that isn't that great. Can I shift my work space? Can I breathe more freely? Can close my eyes and type? What are the things that hold you back?
Eliminate as many barriers as you can: Example: If I put my gym clothes in my backpack I know that the only barrier to getting to the gym is my schedule. (Luckily the gym is on my way home). Another example. After two or three days of coming in to work and closing the door to my office I have started to establish that from 9-12 I am doing work. Another Example: When I sit down to write five songs in a row I get in my head about the overwhelming task. So I set a twenty minute timer. and no matter what I am allowed to quit after 20 minutes. This short deadline has two effects: It keeps me from overthinking and it motivates me to move faster. "I only have 20 minutes to write these songs." Do ONE thing: How able are you to do one thing over and over again? For example my work is putting together a huge program to launch. I have had to chunk down everything into the smallest tasks. Part of my job is to write a lot of the content for the forms that are involved. There are some tasks that involve a lot of different types of thinking. This means that these need to be chunked down EVEN further. You can't write content AND do research at the same time. Switching back and forth just takes so much mental energy. (at least for me) take for example calendaring: instead of writing out all the events from the year and trying to put dates on them at the same time. A better method can be to just brain vomit all the pertinent events for the year and say. Okay is this everything? When you can say yes finally, THEN and only then you can begin to add dates to the events. Give yourself a little bit of slack and dismantle the barriers to your success.
